  • Hi from Brisbane

    Hi guys,

I've been shadowing the forum for about 2 months now and figured it's about time I said G'day.

I'm pretty new to the technicalities of knives but like most young lads, I've liked them since I was a little tyke. From what I can tell here there is a wealth of knowledge and experience, so I'm looking forward to learning a lot more.

Mostly at this stage I'm interested in decent quality EDC and some high-entry-level hunting gear. Anyone with useful pointers for a new bloke, your advice would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Daniel

welcome aboard, good to see you out of the shadows of the forum ;-)
I guess the big question for you will be do you want to make these knives you are after or just buy them? Or I guess you could also buy and then modify.

The plural of knife is knives.
      One knife.
      Two knives.
      The plural possessive is knives'.

That's a good question actually, and to be honest I'm not sure I know enough to answer it yet.

My personal tastes (in knives as well as everything else) tend toward actually making/building something myself rather than buying it, but I seem to be collecting a lot of new hobbies over the last year or so, so I don't know how I'd go in terms of having enough time. But I love the idea of being able to customise things to be exactly how I want, or to design things from the ground up.

For a novice to start to make fixed blades from decent quality steel, how hard and time consuming is it to do a decent job? Personally I'd rather know before I get involved, because if it takes a fair commitment I'd rather get a pro to do it rather than do a half-arsed job myself. Any advices?

Same with folders. I have a couple things I'd really like to do but the folders look so complicated to get the tolerances fine enough.
