    Hi all

I'm currently in Darwin doing an aircraft engineering apprenticeship. I have previously worked fo the vintage
aviator in Wellington NZ so the intrest for building things by hand is something I have always liked.
Myself and another apprentice are keen to have a go at forging our own knives eventually I would like to make a full kitchen knife set. Knowing no one around and having not made a knife before. Is there any tips people could give??

    Thanks
    Brendon

    Welcome to the forum.

Just start reading the forum, especially in the custom makers and knifemaker areas. You'll find more tips than you can poke a stick at. Plenty of helpful people here is you want to ask questions.

        Welcome to the forum.
I have an aircraft maintenance background as well.
I have also been going to make a knife since about 1984, I ve got one half done atm.
My response to you is read this and other knife forums, have a look at you tube for knife making/forging videos. I would also suggest you start small and the first knife be by stock removal, this will teach you a lot and not cost the earth in tooling, heat treating can be done by Hills heat treatment for a small cost. Once the knife making bug bites and it will (along with the tool acquisition bug) you can work your way up from there.
Goodluck with it all, have fun.
        Cheers
        Pete

          Brendon,
I dont personally know any makers in Darwin that I can steer you towards. Have a good look around here. Lots of help available online.

Maybe drop Stew Townsend a PM (he is on here). He is the VP of the Australian Knife Makers guild and might know of someone up there who can point you in the right direction.

Simeon Jurkijevik is in the NT, just south of Darwin. A master craftsman, and extremely knowledgable.

You could try Gary Siemer ( 08 8988 3241) maybe Humpty Doo (not sure if the phone number is correct) he was the State Rep for NT but haven't contacted him for a couple of years.

The plural of knife is knives.
                One knife.
                Two knives.
                The plural possessive is knives'.

                    THANK YOU,
to all who have given, a warm welcome. The advice has been helpful and will do something about having a go at
Making a small knife when I come back from trade school early December.
The bug for tools has long since being caught. And a pride in something I've made also is a bug that
I have had for a while.

Hi Pete what do you mean making a knife as stock removal (do you mean citing a blank and grinding without
                      doing the heat treatment myself.

As for the paramedic I volunteer with St John up here too!
Don't know if that will make it better or worse hahaha!

Yep, google stock removal and start reading.
Now if you use carbon steel you can harden and heat treat yourself if you have the knowledge and equipment. I would recommend you send the first one to hills for heat treatment, after 10 to 12 hrs of cutting ,shaping, fileing and sanding it removes the possibility of turning it into a paper weight.
Theres a lot to learn but thats half the fun, do the research, watch the videos ask questions, see if you can contact the couple of knife makers in your area and see if you can go and watch them at work.

On another tack, have you run into an older bloke named Peter Renton (also called rabbit)
in the aviation maintenance circles up there?

                        Cheers
