    Hi everyone

I'm new to knife making and am yet to make my first knife.
I am a fitter and have been for 17 years
I am starting off by getting my shed cleaned up a bit and putting in a workbench....big job just cleaning the bloody thing out.
I am going to build a 72" by 2" grinder to get started as I just like to build my gear when I can and after this little project is finished I will be starting on my first knife made from 01 tool steel I am yet to get my steel but have found a few places that sell it. .i will be getting a piece of 300mm by 3 or 4 mm by 500mm to get started
What are your thoughts on steel thickness ? I will be trying to make some skinning knives and hunting knives to start me off.
I will also be sending them out for heat treating because I want the done properly. Can anyone recommend a shop who could heat treat them in a heat treating oven?
I look forward to sharing and becoming a part of this very informative Aussie online community

    Thanks
    Pappy

3 or 4mm would be a good place to start for a small Skinner or Hunter. Don't attempt a big knife for the first few, so you can concentrate on finishing a small knife and move on to your next one.
I get all my blades hardened by Hills Heat Treatment in Melbourne, I think most people without their own ovens use them. You do have to pay postage both ways plus the heat treatment, but as you suggest it's probably worth it when starting out and would like a guaranteed product.

          Welcome aboard.

          3-4 mm is fine.

Hills is the go, there should be an address around here somewhere.

The plural of knife is knives.
          One knife.
          Two knives.
          The plural possessive is knives'.

            Hi again

Thank you for the replies.i have been finding it hard to find parts and information on knife making here in Australia and it seems like all the info and help and good advice has been right under my nose all along.
Thank you again and I will start a thread on my journey into knife making as soon as I get my grinder build underway but at the moment I will be stuck at work for the next week reading up and putting a few drawings on paper for when I get home

            Thanks
            Pappy

G'day Pappy, welcome to the ABF. If you get a chance, can you take plenty of photos as you make your grinder. I just finished one,but it would be great to see what a bloke with your background comes up with, pretty sure there'll be a few others interested as well. Cheers,Scott

Thanks for the warm welcome guys and girls.
I would not expect to much from me I specialise in breakdown maintanence and preventive maintanence and have very basic and cheep tools at home. It has been a very long time since I have done any workshop work but I am looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. I will take lots of photos when I actually get a chance to get a start on the grinder but it looks like it might be a few weeks away because I work away from home and have a lot on my plate at present pulse I will be building my bench space next days off and ordering some parts ....drive wheels tracking wheels ect
Thanks again for the warm welcome
                    Pappy
