  • Hello from bris

    Hi All,

My name is Joe, I'm a novice knifemaker and avid collector. I've only made 2 knives to completion so far, but I have a few new designs I'm set to get to work on.

I'm setting up a small forge this weekend, but I'm still trying to source something suitable to use as an anvil until I can afford a good one. I've been searching on ebay and elsewhere but not found anything great yet.

Could anyone suggest some temporary solutions I could use until I can get an actual anvil. I'm have been unable to source any railroad track or anything else suitable so far, any help is greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Joe

I know where you can find plenty of railroad track but it can only be sourced late at night.

Welcome Joe. Good to see another brissy boy.

Gajinoz I think you should change the name to QueenslandBladeForums

Maybe the Western Australia and Queensland Knife Forums. Seems that is where the members come from.

          Yep, a good weekend.

Good old murphy loves playing games. looks like the rain has settled in nicely. Hopefully I will get some clear sky over the weekend. I still have a camp knife to work on but was really hoping to get my forge up and running.

Welcome. And may I suggest you head over to the Artists Blacksmith Association(Qld) meets at Eagle Farm? Don't be fooled by the name, we're open to anyone who hits hot metal.

Meets are the first & second-to-last Saturdays each month. Subs are minimal & there's a $10 fee per visit to cover consumables & lunch.

                      See here for details: http://blacksmiths-australia.com/index_ ... age448.htm

Cheers for the warm welcome guys.

I went completely primitive on the weekend. I dug a hole in the ground for the forge, I was using charcoal as the fuel.

I learnt a few good lessons:- I need bellows or a blower, as I was not getting the coke or the steel anywhere near hot enough. Also due to me having a poor forge setup. I'm hesitant to invest in a proper setup as I'm off to the army sometime in the next few months.

However I spent about 4 hours belting steel. My arms were damn sore, it was a good day!
