  • Knives and lapidary

Just fund this forum. I have had a long time casual interest in knives, most notably working knives, do not collect as such but have quite a few knives for my fishing, boating, bush walking. I particularly admire the ingenuity of highly specialised working knives.

I also like carving gemstones and after seeing a few knives with stone scales I had a go with making them myself. Here are a few Swiss Army knives with stone scales. I am currently working on jade scales for a couple of Buck 501's and a Buck 510, if there is interest I will post them as I make them. I look forward to contributing to the forum in the future.

The plural of knife is knives.
              One knife.
              Two knives.
              The plural possessive is knives'.

Wow, just wow. That is some awesome work. I would think there would be a definite market for work of that standard.
How are the scales fixed to the SAKs?

Thanks Browny, I am just a hobbiest, there is a guy in the US who customises Buck with stone scales for a living google Redrummund Knives.

The scales are epoxied on, the SAK's have a few rivets that rise above the liners so the stone needs to be drilled to fit them, this means highly translucent material is not appropriate as it would show the rivets. The bucks scale pins can be removed and the spring holder pliened flush. I have seen makers who drill the stone and put pins in, I suspect they would be mostly for show and epoxy does most of the work in attaching the stone as a pin would put a lot of stress on the stone and easily break it.

I dropped one of the chrysoprase scales during polishing and had to start again from scratch.

PS: I have not solved my picture posting issues yet, if anyone had suggestions, when I removed the spaces between the [img] [/img] tags they came up as broke images.

                    Thanks,

                          Hi David

I have had a look at the code.

In your first post you can see the url tags inside the image tags. This is stopping it from displaying the images.

In the second attempt the adr is inside the img tags but the adr does not seem to be complete.

I suggest that you go back in to your original attempt under Edit Post and remove the url tags and make sure you do not leave spaces or they will get put back in automatically. Select Go Advanced when you do this so that you can Preview Changes until you get it right and then Save Changes.
