  • Hello All

Should have introduced myself here first rather than in the forums, so hi everyone.

Knife making is a new hobby for me but working with my hands and making stuff is something I have always loved. My other hobby is building custom high powered mountain bike lights but with all the cheap Chinese knock off's it is very hard to sell quality lights these days. As for machinery I have a lathe and mill and am in the process of building a heat treat oven and 72x2 linisher with VFD. Because of the bike light building I can also anodize aluminium in pretty much any colour which should come in handy when I around to making some folders with alloy scales.

I have certainly learnt lots through reading posts and look forward to learning more.

    Cheers
    Brad

                G'day Brad,
Do you have a website for your MTB lights?
My HID setup is getting very dated and underpowered (it was the ducks guts when all my mates had incandescence globes)
I would be interested in hearing about what you make.
                Regards from Tassie

                          Hi Tazambo

Most of my light builds have been documented on MTBR under my user name is brad72. The light I am currently working on is a remote controlled ashperic helmet light with remote focus (flood to spot). This link will take you to my triple XML bar lamp and links to my other lights can be seen in my signature http://forums.mtbr.com/lights-diy-do-yourself/triple-xml-bar-light-mk2-755024-5.html.

These days we use cree XML leds and drive them up to 3A each. A triple led light puts out nearly 3000 lumens and is like a car headlight. I always rode with a bar and helmet light and all lights have mulitple power levels and lithion ion rechargable batteries.

I have made a lot of custom lights from mountain biking lights, microsope lights down to mill and lathe lights. Rifle lights with aspheric lense are also good as they are light yet very powerful with a big bright spot. Couple that with a powerful red headlamp to stop night blindness and your in business.

At the end of the day as long as I am making something with my hands I am happy.

                          Cheers
                          Brad

                            Hi Brad,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I checked out our thread on mtbr, nice work.
I had a thing for high quality lighting, (tazambo on CPF's) but the sharp stuff is a higher priority lately.
My 2 HID's (a Cygolight z force and one from HIDTechnologies.com.au) were the ducks guts, but 2 x 500 lumens sadly doesn't cut it anymore.

                            Regards
                            David
